If there's not enough, you'll have to pull from another category to cover.ĭo you really just have one category for "personal savings"? I would try to break that up and be more specific about your savings goals. If there's extra, cool, it'll roll over to next month and you won't have to fund as much or you can move it to another category. At the beginning of the month, just drop in whatever you'd like to use that month, and try to stick with it. That might work for you for your grocery category since it's such a varying amount. For things with flexible amounts, I don't use a target at all. The Savings Balance targets I use for things with a specific amount and a future deadline- I want to save $1500 for a vacation by May, I want to save up $1000 for a new computer someday (no hard deadline), etc. I use Needed for Spending targets for bills with fixed amounts- mortgage, phone, internet, etc. and it seems alien to put money in the category only to take it out at the end of the month. What happens to the money at the end of the month? I know it doesn't go towards next month's "spending target", so if I didn't relocate it then after 5 months I'd have nearly £1000 in the groceries category. Using the "spending target" of say £200 (just a random number I pulled), would alert me to save £200 every month which I would never spend. In my case, I have a saving goal of say £100 which I don't hit in a month but make sure that category always has £100 in it every month (my groceries can vary a lot - anywhere between £10 - £90 a month). The obvious example would be groceries (a category recommended for "spending target"). and then after the month is up, I go back and redistribute the leftover money that isn't spent into my savings or personal goals wishes rather than what I'm doing now which is like the reverse of that - top up each category to a decent amount and then put the remainder straight to wish list goals. So this does work for me, however, I am wondering if it would be better to set "spending targets" for the start of the month aka 5% of income on fun, 5% personal, 35% rent, etc.

put the remainder into savings target for next month.įor context, I prefer free stuff like walks, sightseeing while at the same time I don't have many expenses: my grocery bill is minimal, I don't eat out/go drinking too much, etc.

  • put money into recurring payments for the next couple of months (phone bill, software subscriptions, rent, etc.).

  • then make sure all my categories are topped up to a healthy amount (using "savings targets").
  • Put the majority of my paycheck into my 'personal savings' category to hit that goal for that month,.
  • So once a month, I just open up YNAB and: It still is very valuable but with no bad habit I am trying to curve, I am not sure I am making the most of it. YNAB is great, it's helped me get to where I am but now that I am living below my means I don't 'use' it as much.
